The School and Role

This Primary and Secondary SEND Alternative Provision, based in Ashington is looking to appoint a passionate Learning Support Mentor to work in either Key Stage 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 classes on a full-time basis. Working in this Primary and Secondary SEND Alternative Provision as part of an established team, the desired Learning Support Mentor will be working on a small class sized basis with pupils with SEND including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and challenging behaviour. This full time Learning Support Mentor role is long term from April ongoing with the possibility of a permanent vacancy for the right person. The successful Learning Support Mentor will inspire, support and motivate pupils who have been removed from mainstream education. A can-do attitude, a flexible approach and a willingness to take part is a must.

As a Learning Support Mentor you will:

  • Work alongside Teacher/Supervisor to enable the smooth running of the classroom/workshop and to ensure that resources are managed effectively with the help of Teacher/Supervisor.
  • Under direction from Teacher/Supervisor assist in the learning and achievement of all learners in the classroom/workshop, ensuring equality of opportunity for all.
  • Be responsible and accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in work and conduct.
  • Treat learners with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual trust and respect, and at all times observing proper boundaries appropriate to your professional position.
  • Take responsibility for day-to-day supervision of learners.
  • Assist in managing learners effectively, using approaches which are appropriate to learners’ needs in order to inspire, motivate and challenge learners.
  • Have high expectations of behaviour, promoting self-control and independence of all learners.
  • Be responsible for improving your teaching support role through participating fully in training and development opportunities.
  • Be committed to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all pupils within the school
  • Be familiar with the content of the most recent Keeping Children Safe in Education policy.

The school is an established independent alternative school for both primary and secondary pupils aged 6-17 years with a variety of additional needs and challenging behaviour. They aim to prepare the pupils for life in modern Britain by providing them with meaningful opportunities to interact with society and understanding how to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively.

Requirements

The desired Learning Support Mentor will have;

  • Being able to relate well to, and communicate with children is essential for this role. A can-do attitude, a flexible approach and a willingness to take part is a must.
  • Previous experience of working with challenging behaviour.
  • Ability to adapt to fast paced situations.
  • Vocational subjects including hair and beauty, construction, mechanical engineering, electrical and sports experience is desirable but not essential.
