Position Overview: We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant specializing in Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) to join an esteemed educational institution in Hendon, London. This role primarily involves one-on-one support, catering to students in either Key Stage 1 (KS1) or Key Stage 2 (KS2) settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide Individualized Support: Tailor interventions and support strategies to meet the specific social, emotional, and mental health needs of each student, ensuring their progress and well-being.
  • Behavioural Management: Implement effective behavioural management techniques to support students in regulating their emotions and behaviours, promoting a positive and conducive learning environment.
  • Collaborative Planning: Work closely with classroom educators and SENCOs to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans (BSPs), ensuring consistency and alignment with student needs.
  • Crisis Intervention: Be prepared to effectively manage and de-escalate challenging situations or crises, utilizing appropriate strategies and techniques to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of student progress, behaviour incidents, and interventions, contributing to ongoing assessment and review processes.

  • Empathy and Understanding: Demonstrate genuine empathy and understanding towards students with social, emotional, and mental health needs, recognizing the complexity of their experiences and challenges.
  • Resilience: Remain calm and composed in challenging situations, demonstrating resilience and the ability to effectively manage stress and adversity.
  • Flexibility: Adapt quickly to changing circumstances and student needs, demonstrating flexibility in approach and willingness to try new strategies and interventions.
  • Empowerment: Empower students to develop self-awareness, self-regulation, and coping skills, fostering independence and resilience in managing their own emotions and behaviours.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and external agencies to ensure a holistic and coordinated approach to supporting students with SEMH needs.
  • Reflective Practice: Engage in ongoing reflection and professional development, continuously seeking to improve practice and enhance outcomes for students.

Requirements:

  • Relevant Experience: Proven experience working with children with social, emotional, and mental health needs, preferably within a school setting. Experience in implementing behavioural interventions and support strategies is highly desirable.
  • Qualifications: Possess relevant qualifications or training related to special educational needs, with a focus on social, emotional, and mental health. Additional training or certification in behavioural management or counselling may be advantageous.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for collaborating effectively and maintaining accurate records.
  • Patience and Empathy: Display patience, empathy, and understanding towards students, recognizing and validating their feelings and experiences. Maintain a non-judgmental and supportive approach, fostering a sense of safety and trust.
  • Commitment to Safeguarding: Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, adhering to school policies and procedures and maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Enhanced DBS Clearance: Hold an Enhanced DBS Clearance on the Child Only Barred List, or be willing to undergo the necessary checks before employment.
