Teaching Assistant

We are a start-up focused on modern languages education. Our mission is to help secondary school students learn a foreign language by speaking it with students of their similar age abroad. We currently offer Spellian to students of English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and soon Russian.

We were born in London five years ago and since we started, we have seen an overwhelmingly positive response to our method. We work with leading schools all over Europe and are now keen to expand our programme to reach any student interested in speaking foreign languages and making friends around Europe.

What we offer

  • Two teaching assistant positions lasting either one term or the whole school year.
  • A supportive and friendly environment centred around foreign languages education with a passion for European languages and cultures.
  • A thriving opportunity to work in an educational environment and get an integrated view of how a small start-up operates.
  • A fantastic occasion to deepen knowledge of one or more foreign languages and cultures.
  • At the end of the assignment, we provide a formal report describing the activities performed that can be used for external reference. There is also the possibility of extending the contract and promotion to a higher position at the end of the post, for outstanding candidates.

Who we are looking for

  • Someone who is passionate about working with children and young adults and has an ability to inspire and motivate pupils in their learning.
  • A candidate with a keen interest in European languages and culture and solid proficiency in at least one of Spanish, French, Italian or German.
  • A self-starter with a ‘can do’ mindset, with an ability to work as part of a team but who is also confident in using their own initiative.
  • Someone kind, hard-working, and reliable with good organisation and communication skills.

Teaching Assistant Job description:

  • To help prepare creative, stimulating, and relevant resources based on the GCSE, A level and IB syllabuses.
  • To support and monitor the participation and overall progress of students in the Spellian programme, contributing to raising standards of commitment and attainment.
  • To join in introductory calls with participants and provide them with advice on how to make the best use of Spellian (introductory sessions are done in English, so fluency in this language is required).
  • To participate in conversational classes in your native language (either English, Spanish, French, German or Italian) both 1:1 or in small groups.
  • To help develop Spellian by identifying potential schools interested in Spellian and promoting the programme to them.

Terms and Conditions

Spellian offers two types of positions:

  • Long term placements– 4-9 months (Full time or Part time)
  • Short term placements – From 6 weeks to 4 months (Full time or Part time)
  • The salary starts with London living wage and varies depending on the position and experience.
  • Spellian is based in Putney (London), and our office is next to the train and tube stations and multiple bus stops.
  • Spellian is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children; applicants must be willing to undergo the requisite pre-employment procedures, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
